Christmas at Graceland (single)

by The Cheeky Few

/

about

Inspired by multiple visits to The King's home, "Christmas at Graceland" explores the mix of euphoria and profound melancholy that permeates the property. The holiday season seems like the season that this conflict is at its most intense.

lyrics

LYRICS
Well you come home in December and your house it looks the same
And there's frozen rain fallin' on the street that bears your name
Country cooking on the table, Vernon saying grace
You take pills to keep you stable but nothing calms you like this place
Presents fill the living room, there's a pony for Lisa Marie
You get a gold revolver and a starched karate gi

Cause it's Christmas at Graceland, everybody is there
and the family's wonderin, 'bout your Christmas prayer
Do you wish things were different?, simpler too
At least you got Graceland, they got the rest of you

Well you could of stayed on in Tupelo, tried your hand at workin fields
Maybe singin at a country dance after harvesting your yields
Find yourself a down home girl, a mess a kids'll come along
At Christmas it's blue overalls from the Roebuck catalog
Hayseed life a been kind to you, clean living to keep you strong
Do you rue the day you went downtown singin mamma's birthday song?

Cause it's Christmas at Graceland, everybody is there
and America's wonderin, 'bout your Christmas prayer
Do you wish things were different?, simpler too
At least you got Graceland, we got the rest of you

I guess we're all just wondering if you house it looks the same
When we pay to ride in buses 'cross the street that bears your name
We file into your entryway your life before our eyes
We just crane our necks to peek upstairs where you met your sad demise
They string lights up each December and they shine until the dawn
And I hope you can enjoy 'em from your grave across the lawn

Well it's Christmas at Graceland, everybody is there
and the whole world is wonderin, 'bout your Christmas prayer
Did you wish things were different?, simpler too
Now we got Graceland, 'long with the rest of you
